GATHERINGS

Gatherings lie at the heart of Roshi. Founder Roshi Kamdar draws deeply from her Iranian heritage, where hospitality is key, and the Iranian way is to welcome people into the host’s home.

ROSHI.co home — studio space was purposefully designed to enable the bringing together of creatives to initiate new conversations in a relaxed environment. The large dining table in the centre of the room features an inset sharing bowl — reinforcing the idea around community and the sharing of ideas. The space allows for a different kind of engagement, removing the formality associated with boardroom by creating a home environment that encourages informal chats and a place to meet new people on a similar wavelength.

Inspired by Japanese, Shinto and Buddhism Roshi personally values the belief where space is about the relationships among people, rather than framing space as a relationship between objects and walls, making and using in everyday life and the relationships that they create. A high value placed on harmony in relationships and a focus on the connections — spoken and unspoken— that tie people together. And where in Buddhism came the ideas of emptiness and selflessness.  Similarly, Japanese spaces tend to focus on structuring interactions, contingency, and connections to other people and to society.

STORIES TO TELL

The gatherings are an opportunity for people to share and tell their stories with other creatives, learning from each other’s experiences and developing new ideas together. These collaborations are integral to the company, which views the stories behind people’s work as being just as important as the works themselves.

Also inspired by the Japanese concept of “Ichi-go ichi-e”, which refers to the importance of treasuring a moment in time, in particular when a group of people are gathered together as this experience of the people you mix with on that occasion with never be repeated in exactly that way again.
